Fuel gauge needle stuck on empty

My fuel level needle is now stuck all the way on empty, and it's been acting flaky for a year or two. I'm looking for a troubleshooting guide to figure out if the sending unit can be repaired or if it needs replacing, any advice?

It's actually a very common marine issue due to corrosion and wear. have you checked the wiring and ground?

I haven't checked the wiring or ground yet but I'll inspect those first and clean any corrosion I find
