lake levels current status and recovery

I've noticed that quite a few lakes have seen their water levels drop quite a bit over the past few years. Is there any recent data or updates on how these lakes are doing now? For example, Indiana has had a particularly rainy few months, and the mountains in California got a good amount of snow. Have these weather conditions helped bring lake levels back up?

Yes, the snow in the Sierras and the recent rain in Indiana had a significant impact. Monroe Lake is improving, and some Indiana reservoirs are also getting better. This year's snowmelt has left Lake Shasta and Lake Oroville almost full out west. Although there has been some progress, some groundwater areas remain low. Every winter month, we are able to go outside on at least a few days thanks to our weather. When the lake was down 5', we were still boating because we had 8.5' under the dock at full pool. Generally, we vary about 18" to 24" seasonally.

Here in Las Vegas, after a pretty good 2024, this year had a very weak snow season in the Rockies that feed the Colorado river leaving our reservoirs like Lake Powell and Lake Mead back near their historic lows. We have about 10 feet left in Lake Meade before we hit another record low. California, even when they have a great rain year, still takes too much water. They have been tearing down dams and letting precious fresh water run into the ocean where it is lost to human use, while their water use goes up. In Las Vegas, we have cut water use by 20% while doubling our population. We need California to make similar effort and progress. They take over 50% of the Colorado's water. Nevada takes 4%.

In California, the strong snowpack and storms really boosted reservoir levels, places like Shasta and Oroville are near full. Overall, conditions have improved quite a bit compared to the past few years.
